This cactus grows pads that are wide and flat, which will bud in rounded shapes, sometimes resembling a heart. The Opuntia is also known as The Prickly Pear Cactus; as the name suggests, these plants produce fruits that are commonly used in jams and jellies. These cacti are very hearty, with the ability to withstand freezing temperatures! The pointy bits that usually come to mind when thinking of cacti are called spines, the smaller, more hair-like spines are called glochids which are often barbed and prickly.
