In the spring of 2019, the first ever image of a black hole was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope. The EHT is actually 8 telescopes around the world which are linked, creating an Earth-sized telescope. In the spring of 2021, the magnetic fields of the black hole were captured in a polarized-based image with clarity never before seen. This black hole is located in the Messier 87 galaxy (AKA Virgo A or NGC4486), first catalogued by French astronomer Charles Messier in the 1700's. Almost every galaxy has at least one black hole, and this pin celebrates these beautiful and fascinating cosmic objects!
