In 1925, sled dogs Balto and Fox co-led their team through the final leg of The Great Race of Mercy into Nome, Alaska. Kassen, the Norwegian sledder of the team was supposed to make a hand off to another sledder, Ed Rohn, who would have made the final run into Nome. Rohn was asleep when Kassen reached the relay point and Kassen chose to continue on. The team ran an additional 25 miles due to this extension. The delivery was made at 5:30am with all of the antitoxin intact, the serum was thawed and available for use the same day.
